A native of England, Henry Marcus Holmes (1836-1895) served in the Union army during the Civil War. He established a land and law practice after he was honorably discharged from the military at Fort McKavett, Texas, in 1871. He was elected Justice of the Peace in Menard County in 1872 and in the mid 1870s played a prominent role as a prosecuting attorney during the "Hoo Doo War" in neighboring Mason County. When friend Lawrence Sullivan ("Sul") Ross was elected Governor of Texas in 1887, Holmes served as his private secretary. The collection contains letters received by Henry M. Holmes and others.
